Imago Dei

This picture is no doubt getting mixed feelings from those reading today's blog....read on.

The Image of God (often appearing in Latin as Imago Dei) is a concept and theological doctrine that asserts that human beings are created in God's image and therefore have inherent value independent of their utility or function (Wikipedia)

ALL humans have inherent value independent of their utility or function. ALL humanity has inherent value. Every human being has a quality on the inside that is of value – the image of God!!!

We must RESPECT each individual not because its just nice to do so but because they bear the image of God Himself.

I was recently chatting with a year eleven student who is not a Christ-follower yet. We talked about poverty in the earth which she is very passionate about. She volunteers once a week to help the poor in her community. Her big question was about God's apparent lack to look after the needy and those suffering in our world.

We chatted for a long time and then I had the pleasure of sharing with her that I could see so many wonderful God qualities in her life. She smiled quitely and was encouraged by my comment. I told her that her passion for the poor and needy was so like God, infact I told her that I thought God had given her a special talent to work with such people.

In nutshell I was honoring the image of God in her life! Genesis 1:26-27 tells us indeed that humanity is made in the image of God. It does not say that those alone who are following Jesus are created in the image of God. My teenage friend went away feeling respected and valued; it was an honor to have the converstaion with her.

Some Questions for you to consider:
1. How do you show respect to those who are not following Christ?
2. Do people feel valued after having chatted with you? Pray this through.
3. How do you personally restore dignity to people's lives?
4. How could you be better at respecting the image of God in lives that don't follow Christ?
